"Haunted House"

We are pleased to present Polly Apfelbaum’s installation titled "Haunted House" this season at T Space. Inspired by a haunted house in Elizaville near her home in the Hudson Valley, Polly has said: “I randomly searched the internet for images that I thought would be found in a haunted house – the leftover ephemera of many different lives. The internet is filled with ghosts that never materialize. I wanted to bring them into existence: scrapbook pages, images of children’s forgotten art projects, photos of trips taken, toys, Noah’s ark, domestic goods lost or left behind, family pets, and things that just happen to appear: snakes, deviled eggs and other images that provoke a general life-story.”
The "Haunted House" installation includes 350 images that Polly has collected and compiled into the form of an Atlas/poster book. Most of the images were taken from the internet (Google image search) and some are photos that Polly has taken. The unbound pages of the Haunted House Atlas will be hung floor to ceiling throughout the gallery. New three-dimensional works made of air-dried clay will complement the haunted house images.
The “Haunted House” installation was first shown in 2011 at Atelier Amden in Switzerland. We are glad to have the opportunity to bring this project back to the Hudson Valley, near the site of the haunted house in Elizaville that served as the inspiration for this project. As a parallel to the experience in Amden, at “T” Space, each visitor may take a poster off
the wall for their journey and moonshine will be served.
A thirty six page catalog accompanies the exhibition. The catalog includes an introduction by Polly Apfelbaum and Steven Holl’s catalog essay is titled “Scattering Spirit.”
